Meet Jimmy
Jimmy Byrge is an East Tennessee writer whose work is rooted in the Appalachian mountains he has called home his entire life.
Raised in a coal mining community, he developed a deep respect for the land, its traditions, and the people who shaped his life.
Faith, family, and heritage guide Jimmy’s storytelling. His stories, poems, and songs reflect the warmth, resilience, and sense of community found throughout the Tennessee mountains. He lives in his home community with his wife, close to their children and grandchildren.
The Evergreen Christmas Tree is Jimmy’s first published children’s book. Through his writing, he hopes to preserve and share the mountain adventures, memories, and voices that might otherwise be forgotten.

This Ole Flag
Written by Jimmy Byrge
The wind a blowing on a warm summer day
Something caught my eye
And took me away
It was if this ol flag had something to say
It’s beat and battered
Ya I know
I gotta replace her one of these days
Gonna be hard
Cause every morning
This ol flag and me
We sit together peacefully
It’ll sure be sad
When I replace this ol flag
This ol flag beat and battered from the storm
Weathered and faded
The ends are torn
So proudly waving in the warm summer wind
Reminding me just how long it’s been
Waving for my freedom
Again and again
Her red valor the purest white and her loyal blue
Make up her colors
For me and you
So many have given all to protect her
Or keep her from falling to the ground
Not for her beauty
But for which it stands
A symbol of freedom
And the price paid for you and I
So looking at this ol flag takes me back there
Standing for our freedom
On land sea and air
This ol flag has been to the moon
And planted on a hill in February, World War two
by some soldiers
who didn’t make it through
Reminders our freedom will always be
This ol flag lives in me
Wherever I go
this ol flag is
Kinda like the Lord
It’s in my soul
Beat and battered from the storm
Weathered and faded and the ends are torn
This ol flag was born with only a few stars and stripes
My how it’s grown
I pray she will proudly wave
Long as time goes on
She’s beat and battered by the storm
Weathered and faded and the ends are torn
As long as I breathe
I’ll salute her every morn
This ol flag
Weathered and torn
Children’s Books
The Adventures of a Mountain Boy Vol.1
These stories of my youth have taken me back in time—a simpler time if you will. Families were much larger in our rural mountain community and times were harder in some ways, but it has been such a blessing to put pen to paper while reflecting upon these times. The people I met along my journey that helped shape and mold my life were very important to me. I wanted to capture some of their stories and my own in this first edition of “The Adventures of a Mountain Boy.”
I hope you enjoyed reading my stories and you are looking forward to Vol. 2.
